A day trip to Hakone offers a perfect blend of natural wonders and cultural experiences, centered around the famous 'Hakone Loop.' Journey through mountains on the zig-zagging Tozan Railway, soar over active volcanic vents on the Hakone Ropeway, and sail across the caldera waters of Lake Ashi on a pirate ship. Real experiences from real travelers
We got lucky with the weather and saw Mt Fuji perfectly! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the shrine and the best spots for photos. The private car made it so much easier than navigating the trains ourselves.
The ropeway and lake were beautiful, but Owakudani was very crowded. The black eggs were a fun experience. The lunch provided was delicious traditional Japanese set meal.
The contrast between Tokyo and Hakone is amazing. The pirate ship cruise was relaxing. Highly recommend booking a private tour if you are a family, it saves so much time.
It was freezing in January but the visibility of Fuji-san was crystal clear. Make sure to bring a heavy coat and gloves. The tour ran on time and the van was comfortable.
Our driver was very polite and helpful. We customized our itinerary to spend more time at the Open Air Museum which was fantastic. A must-do day trip.
Unfortunately Fuji was hiding behind clouds all day, which we knew was a risk. The rest of the tour was good, but the main attraction was missing. Check the weather forecast!
Booking was easy and the pickup was right on time at our Shinjuku hotel. The guide spoke perfect English and helped us navigate the crowds at the ropeway.
I loved the cable car ride. The views are breathtaking. It's a long day with travel time, but definitely worth it to see the countryside.
Everything you need to know for your journey
Winter (December to February) offers the highest probability of clear skies and unobstructed views of Mt. Fuji. Summer months often have haze and clouds obscuring the mountain.
Most day trips from Tokyo last between 9 to 11 hours, including travel time to and from the city.
Most public onsens have strict no-tattoo policies. However, some private tours can arrange visits to 'tattoo-friendly' facilities or private rental baths.
The JR Pass covers the Shinkansen to Odawara, but does not cover the Odakyu lines, Hakone Tozan train, ropeway, or pirate ships. A Hakone Free Pass is often better value.
Tours usually proceed rain or shine. However, if the ropeway or cruise is cancelled due to strong winds, alternative activities (like the Aquarium or Checkpoint museum) are substituted.
Small backpacks are fine. For large suitcases, it's best to leave them at your Tokyo hotel or use a luggage delivery service (Takkyubin) if you are staying overnight in Hakone.
It depends on the specific package. Some include a traditional Japanese lunch, while others give you free time to choose your own dining options.
Private tours can be customized for wheelchair users. However, public transport tours involve many stairs, and some sites like the Shrine are not fully accessible.
You can buy them at the souvenir shop in Owakudani valley. They are hard-boiled in the hot springs and said to add 7 years to your life!
