All the details about your upcoming adventure in one place
Set sail on the pristine waters of Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), a caldera lake formed by a volcanic eruption 3,000 years ago. This iconic cruise offers more than just a boat ride; it is the centerpiece of the classic 'Hakone Loop' sightseeing route. Board one of the whimsical, multi-deck Pirate Ships—modeled after 18th-century battleships—and glide across the mirror-like surface. On clear days, the lake provides one of Japan's most famous vistas: the snow-capped cone of Mount Fuji towering over the surrounding mountains, perfectly framed by the vermilion Peace Torii gate of Hakone Shrine rising from the water. Whether you're visiting for the autumn foliage, the winter clarity, or the cool summer breeze, a Lake Ashi cruise is the essential Hakone experience.

During the Edo period, Hakone was a critical checkpoint on the Tokaido road connecting Tokyo (Edo) and Kyoto. The lake and shrine have been subjects of ukiyo-e art for centuries.

Real experiences from real travelers
We booked the Mt Fuji and Hakone day tour and the pirate ship was the absolute best part. We got lucky with a crystal clear day and saw Fuji-san perfectly from the deck. The ship itself is so fun for photos. Highly recommend booking a tour that includes the ropeway too!
The cruise was relaxing and the ship is very unique. We didn't see Mt Fuji due to clouds, but the mist making its way through the mountains made it feel mystical. The floating Torii gate looks amazing from the water. Good value.
Great way to see Hakone. The boat connects perfectly with the ropeway at Togendai. We bought the black eggs at Owakudani afterwards. The tour guide was excellent and everything ran on time. The boat is very stable.
As recommended, we went in January and the visibility was perfect. The air was crisp but the view of the snow-capped mountain was breathtaking. The pirate ship has a nice indoor area to warm up. A must-do.
My children loved the pirate theme on the boat. There are statues and 3D art inside. It's a bit touristy but in a fun way. The lake is beautiful. Just be prepared for crowds at the port if you go on a weekend.
The bullet train return option is a lifesaver. We had a full day exploring the shrine, the lake, and the volcano. The cruise was smooth and the breeze was refreshing in the summer heat.
I've been many times, but the pirate ship never gets old. It's the best way to cross from Moto-Hakone to Togendai. The autumn colors were starting to show and looked lovely from the water.
Sailing towards the vermilion Torii gate was a magical moment. The ship is large and comfortable. We took the 'Queen Ashinoko' which has a beautiful classic wood interior. Very romantic experience.

Yes, the Pirate Ships are barrier-free. There are ramps for boarding and elevators inside the ships to access different decks. However, accessibility at some ports might vary, so checking current status is recommended.
A one-way trip from end to end (e.g., Togendai to Moto-Hakone) typically takes about 30-40 minutes. Round trips are approximately 70 minutes.
Yes, you can bring luggage. The ships are spacious, but it's often more convenient to use luggage delivery services or lockers at the stations if you plan to explore the area afterwards.

While you can buy tickets on the spot, booking a tour in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak seasons (spring/autumn) or if you want a guaranteed seat on a tour bus from Tokyo.
The cruise operates in rain, but may be suspended in cases of heavy fog or strong winds. If cancelled, tour operators usually offer alternative itineraries or refunds depending on the policy.
